I went to the local lumber yard and built this big 48x60 inch board at the shop. I wanted to take full advantage of the setting, where it didn’t matter if I spilled buckets of paint on the floor and splashed it across the walls. I wanted to paint like a true maniac and thats what I did here with this abstract painting. I laid the board down on the greasy ancient concrete shop floor, and went to town with huge brushes, dripping and slopping watered-down acrylic paint across broad areas. I’d get it nice and loaded with paint and then pick it up and let the paint run down as I moved the board, manipulating the stream of color trailing down and pooling on the floor. No drop cloth, no plan, no rules. Later I finished the more controlled phase of the painting in oils.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eWhen I painted this my tree obsession had branched out into roots and bark. Although I wasn’t deliberately painting bark here that’s what it looks like to me now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eSomeone once hung this horizontally and it suddenly transformed from bark into a sunset beach scene that was almost better than the vertical orientation . I started doing this to show that it wasn’t a portrait of anyone in particular, but rather a painting of the Everywoman. The faceless divine mother of all is the very spirit of nature. She is faceless because she is represented in everything and without a specific identity or specific presence. It was created as part of a video series poking fun at the creative process called \u003cem\u003eThe Crazy Artist\u003c\/em\u003e. Over the course of three days I recorded the making of this painting from start to finish and posted the results on social media in the form of a trilogy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eThe first video was posted to TikTok and within a week it had gone viral and the comments section was blowing up! It was wild. The commenters quickly veered into a argument over what art was and what made art \u003cem\u003egood\u003c\/em\u003e, and so on. Because what they were seeing was in part a spoof of an artist creating, and because at the end of that first video the painting had only three hours of work into it, it wasn’t yet a good painting in my opinion. It was hard and fast in the UGLY phase. I started with a very watery messy abstract pass over the whole canvas in acrylic, not really knowing what I was making, but having a whole lot of fun doing it. After establishing a nice texture I decided to switch to oils to take advantage of their look and feel.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eWhen I was in Arkansas one day I was out for a walk along the river that ran past my dads shop. It was late in the year and nestled up in a bed of rusty brown leaves I found a nearly perfect deer skull and some other random bones laying around it. It had been there awhile and was clean and bleached white from the sun. I took it with me and it was now sitting on a shelf in my studio. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eThe subject in this painting appeared pretty late into the painting. In the messy abstract shapes I could kind of make out a deer skull and so I decided that I’d push it in that direction. One of the plants I was working with while I was there was Pinon Blanco. Each day I would drink a shot of this green plant, similar to a shot of wheatgrass but better tasting. The plant is said to bring light into the heart. Working with a plant in this way requires the assistance of the shaman who sings a special blessing song at the beginning and end of the week to open and close the “diet”. I only had a week with this plant, often people go many months learning from a plant in this way. Anyway, as the Shaman was singing the closing song at the end of my last night, this image came to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003ePiñon blanco is growing around me and penetrating my body, interacting with my main energetic channel up my spine, through my heart and lungs and into my mind. From the inspiration of nature I create whole new worlds, planets are born… I’m an antenna for creative energy and thus creation. The piece is called Propagation. I passed a flower bed along the sidewalk and was mesmerized by a fabulous poppy flower which grew there. It seemed as if the center of this flower was a tiny replica of the entire universe. It didn't even seem real, or possible. How could this be just a flower! We were quite a ways down the dirt road from them and we could still hear them in the morning. Roosters have noting on these imperial birds! I had the pleasure of taking care of the farm on occasion and I grew fond of peacocks and learned a lot from being around them, and I just had to paint them.
